The Newtown Sandy Hooks traveled
to Fort Trumbull National Seashore in New London on Saturday
to put the finishing touches on this season's 'Hits for Harmon'
fund raiser and came away with disappointment at the hands of
the Thames River Nine.
'Muhl' Snyder's cry for help fell on deaf ears as a small
contingent of six regulars (from a squad of 20+) made the short
trip to New London. He was able to patch together a full squad
of ballists and recruits from other clubs to support the local
nine.
Game one was a decisive victory for the Thames club (16 to
9) as they took advantage of Newtown's makeshift line-up. The
nightcap turned into a nail-biter are the Sandy Hooks just missed
evening the score in a 6 to 7 loss, on what turned out to be
a beautiful base ball day by the sea.
Match details from our scribe on the scene...

Game 1 (1861 - 9 innings) New London 16 Newtown 9
- '90' Keane handled the pitching duties for the Sandy Hooks.
The Newtown 5 were joined by 'Pinetar' Kornhaas, Brian Jacobs
and Joel Figueroa. New London supplied the RF each inning.
- It took the Hooks until the 4th inning to get a hit.
- New London had an 8 - 0 led early and Hooks came back to within
10 - 7 after 6 innings before New London pulled away late.
Game 2 (1861 - 6 innings) New London 7 Newtown 6
- After signing autographs for his cranks, '90' toed the box
for the second time
- Kevin the Crank came out and played RF for the Hooks in Game
2 and made numerous put outs ( He's the guy in the blue shirt
in 90's photos)
- Hooks jumped out to early 5 -0 lead after 3 innings. New London
tied game at 5 after 5 innings
- After 5 innings it was decided that the 6th inning would be
the last as some of he Hooks were about to turn into pumpkins
- Hooks took lead at 6-5 in top of 6th, but could not hold off
New London as they walked off with a 7-6 victory.
- After exchanging huzzahs, teams retired to Raider's Roost
for Pints and Sandwiches
Overall:
- Many thanks to those who came out and helped field a team.
The newcomers filled in admirably. Especially Joel's fielding
at 3rd base. Players from New London even commented to me after
the game about how good he was and were even more shocked to
learn that it was his first time playing vintage ball.
- It was a great setting, great weather, and all around a great
day!
- Hooks were unable to master New London's version of 'The Green
Monster' (big hill in LF on which the fort sits). New London
placed many safeties on and around the hill while the Newtown
blasts were gobbled up by the New London outfielders who definitely
had a home field advantage on how to play the bounds on the hill.
- Overall the Hooks played fairly solid matches. We hit the
ball hard with only a few errors and blunders leading to runs.
We were just outplayed on this particular day. Especially with
the very apparnet advantage of knowing how to play the hill.

Thanks go to Mister Edward Baker and the Thames River Nine
for providing the hospitality and a great place to experience
vintage ball.
